Buggy

Spring Carnival is a hectic time at Carnegie Mellon in which many organizations participate for three straight days in various activities. A definite highlight of carnival proceedings is the annual Buggy competition. The Buggy program is a combination of industrial design, mechanical engineering, athletics, and raw dedication on the parts of many people.

The Buggies are steered by a female CMU student, one that is small enough to fit into the petite enclosure that is the Buggy itself. The buggy course is both down and uphill, so it requires a steady mix of fast, strong pushers as well as a mechnically sound and aerodynamic buggy. It also requires a skillful driver, one who knows the course inside and out.

Buggy represents the best of abilities in KDR men: a mix of athletics, engineering and the responsiblity to get up at 4 AM to stand around with a flag. Buggy is a very unusual event; months upon months of training and planning go into two trials of actual racing, maybe four and half minutes total of action. Is it worth it? Unequivocally. Buggy is part of what makes CMU such a unique and exciting school – Buggy is done nowhere else.

« Our women are fast.

KDR typically rolls three men’s teams, with two women’s teams. Such an effort requires the coordination of 25 pushers, several engineers and the entire house to make sure that the drivers are safe on the course. It is truly an activity that is house-wide, and it brings the brothers and the Womens pushteam extremely close, forging a tight bond that only a fraternity could support.

KDR Buggy is much more than the sum of its parts, it allows us to flex our athletic muscles a bit, show off our engineering skill, and brings the men of KDR closer together as a house. How? Come out to a buggy practice and you’ll see.
